In case you are working on fixing your computer for faster performance, you may go ahead and try the below steps to make your PC faster:
* Close memory-eating running programs and startup programs
Open Task manager and search for running applications that are eating up the memory. This way, you can kill the processes that are no longer required to run and it will free up the space on the RAM.
Also, if you’re running Windows 10 you can go to Startup and Enable/Disable all the services that are not required on Startup. Doing this can have a visible impact on startup time.
* Alternatively, you can search for “MSCONFIG” utility (in Windows 7) > goto Startup tab and uncheck all the programs that are not required at the startup
* Clean the residual junk
You may open Computer icon from the desktop and right-click the disk drive (C: D: etc) > Properties and click on the button Disk Cleanup. Having this option will cleanup junk files from the drive.
(Advance tip: You may also select Cleanup system files after Disk Cleanup. This will remove the error logs, Windows update residual files etc which can free up a lot of space from the system).
* Uninstall useless programs
You may go to Control Panel > Programs and Features to uninstall programs from Windows. Alternatively, you can also search the same or “appwiz.cpl” from the Start menu in order to open.
If you own a really old laptop, and it is running dead slow, you can also try additional tips as below to make it faster.
* Defragment the drive
Open Computer from the desktop and right-click the disk drive (C: D: etc) > Properties > Tools and click on the Defragment button. Start the process and it shall take its time for analysis and defragmentation.
(Please note that it won’t be helpful if you’re running Windows on a SSD)
* Error Checking
Open Computer from the desktop and right-click the disk drive (C: D: etc) > Properties > Tools and click on the “Check Now” button.
* Remove transparency and disable visual effects
Right-click on the “Computer” icon on the desktop to open its Properties.
Click Advanced system settings to open the System Properties menu. On the Advanced tab under Performance, click Settings.
This will open the Performance Options menu. In the Visual Effects tab, either choose Adjust for best performance to turn off all unnecessary animations and special effects, or choose Custom: and deselect the visual effects you think can live without. When you’re finished, click OK to apply your changes.
* Increase the Virtual Memory
Go to the Windows Settings and type performance. Choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. In the new window, go to the Advanced tab and under the Virtual memory section and click on Change. At the bottom of the new window, check what is the Recommended Value is and how it compares to the Currently allocated one. If the current setting is significantly lesser than the recommended, uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives box at the top of the same windows and then click on Custom size. Enter the desired number (such as 17000) in the Initial Size box, and also in the Maximum size box. Click OK to save the new settings, come out and apply the settings globally.
If by any chance, you have tried all of the above tasks and still it doesn’t work, we still have some things to try.
* Open Control Panel. Under Security and Maintenance, click Troubleshoot common computer problems. Next, under System and Security, click Run maintenance tasks.
* System Restore
Search for System Restore from the Start menu. This should open a System Restore window asking for a restoration point. If you have a restore point created manually or automatically in the past date, this setting can help. Restore the system and it can work for you.
* Format the system
If doing all the above task is not at all helping you, we recommend you go for a fresh installation of Windows. Make sure you have proper bootable media with Windows installer (such as Windows installation disk or USB drive) before proceeding. Consult an expert or a local technician for any assistance while installation.
Hope this helps.
